Corrections

Over the years we have discovered many mistakes in family tree information that has been shared online and even printed in books. When you have to correct a set of 17th great grandparents it's not too painful, but make a change to your 4th great grandparents and you've got a big tree shakeup. As it has become nearly impossible to contact every tree owner to share corrected information I've decided to start making a list of our most important family tree corrections here. PLEASE DO NOT COPY the information on this page. Share a link to this page instead so that future edits will be included. If you have any questions or additional information on these corrections please contact Michelle.

FAMILY TREE CORRECTIONS:

JONES FAMILY

Mary Missouri BURT (1841-1912) - Washington Mathew Burt (1817-1892) is the brother of Mary, NOT her father as most people have connected in their family trees. Washington married an Elizabeth J. and according to his Will had no issue (children). Continued research on this family has provided very little information other than that her parents are more likely Mathew Burt (1800-____) and Zylphia (1803-____). Mathew Burt also had an unknown first wife who was the mother of Washington Mathew Burt, making him the half-brother of Mary, our 2xggm.

Moody JERNIGAN (1792-1865) - From our 3xggf Moody Jernigan to 9xggf Thomas Jernigan Sr. (1614-1705) there is much confusion in several of the in-between generations. I have it documented pretty well but I believe research should continue to help sort out each Jernigan line. The lineage (documented as well as currently possible) that we have now is Moody, son of Lewis Jr., son of Lewis Sr., son of Jesse Henry, son of Henry Jr., son of Henry Sr., son of Thomas Jernigan Sr. Note: This correction deleted our direct relationship to Lydia Keene (wife of George Jernigan Jr.), who is related to George Washington.
Merrit JONES - (a.k.a. Merit, Merrette) The parents of our 3xggf Merrit Jones are still UNKNOWN. We have a few leads but none that can be confirmed yet. As of August 2018. I've provided tons of info on Ancestry, FamilySearch, and WikiTree about this. Merrit is often confused with another family, W.A.M. Jones, which is William Andrew Monroe Jones (1819-1901), son of Uriah Jones and Mary Trice. W.A.M. Jones middle name is Andrew Monroe, not Andrew Merrit. This is a widespread mistake in family trees that have combined the 2 different families into one. Our Merrit is from Randolph County, Georgia, to Coffee County, Alabama. Contrary to other information online, we have no proof that he moved to Texas at any time, and his children were all born in Georgia and Alabama... not Texas. This information regarding Texas is likely for the W.A.M. Jones family, not ours. Our Merrit's wife was Ann Rogers. The 1880 US Fed Census lists Virginia as the birthplace of Merrit's father and Georgia for his mother, and Georgia as his birthplace. It also lists Virginia as the the birthplace for both of Ann's parents, and her birthplace as South Carolina. We are determined to find the parents of Merrit Jones... however, our family has been searching for them for over 30 years.

ODOM FAMILY

Benjamin C. ODOM (1793-____) - We've gone back and forth on Benjamin's line a few times and there's still work to be done. This is the lineage we have documented as best we can at this time; Benjamin C. Odom, Jacob Odom Sr., Abrahama Odom, Jr., Abraham Odom, Sr., Jacob Odom, Richard Odom, William Odom Jr., William Odom/Oldham Sr.

SHADIX FAMILY

Solomon WHATLEY (1785-1877) - Solomon is the son of Jesse Whatley (both served in the War of 1812), and Rachel Taylor. Solomon was married first to Polly McLendon and second to Susan Kelly. While it first appeared that most of Solomon's children were from his first marriage to Polly, a published booklet "The Whatley Family from 1780-1968 by Sina Lazenby Davis" states that only their first 3 children were; Sarah, William, and Simeon. If the rest of his children are indeed from his second marriage, to Susan Kelly, that would make her our 4th Great Grandmother; instead of Polly McLendon.

MANER FAMILY

Elizabeth "Lizzie" EDWARDS (1880-1950) - Lizzie is the wife of Henry William Maner, Paulding County, Georgia and our Great Grandmother. Our Elizabeth "Lizzie" Edwards is the daughter of Benjamin F. Edwards and Polley A. (maiden name unknown). Her parents are NOT James Monroe Edwards and Sarah Ellen Strickland... their daughter is Elizabeth "Callie" Edwards who married Albert Trescartes and moved to Nevada. This correction created a big shakeup in our family tree and led to months of research on the TWELVE different Benjamin F. Edwards I found that may or may not be our Benjamin F. Edwards. Our research on these families will continue!
